K-Mint 6 and 7 (based on Fall 2008, and Spring 2009, Kubuntu) both sucked. K-Mint 5 LTS was based on KDE3, worked great and I continued using it unti last Fall. They were making the transition to KDE4 and it took until the K-Mint 8, Fall 2009, based version of Kubuntu to get it right. KDE lost a lot of respect with the turmoil in changing from KDE3 to KDE4. Scooter Phillipson announced his departure to GNOME a few months ago. I can't comment about GNOME Mint since I've never tried it. Mint 9 LTS with a repository of 30,000 apps should be gorgeous since Mint 8 is stable and nice. There is a new version of Ubuntu (and Mint) coming out next month. It is for older hardware and is based on the LXDE desktop. It needs less than 256MB of RAM.
Yeah, those up to date codecs are nice. A few months ago a friend emailed me back that the 'toon I had just sent him wouldn't play on his Windows box. That was my laugh of the week.
