Debian really is the the most stable. Lvlug.org is still
using Etch, 2.4 kernel, even though Lenny is now the
stable release for Debian using the 2.6 kernel.
I know the base differences between Debian and RedHat
architectures would probably be huge for you, but it
would only be a onetime hit if you stick with Debian.
For you Ubuntu Studio could be a good place to start
to checkout the capabilities of a Debian based system.
If you don't like how Studio handles its' updates, It could
be used as a model to create your own Debian system
just the way you want it to be.
