Hi Al and others that may be interested in IRC (Internet
Relay Chat).
Here is a short informative article "IRC, Still the Best
Support Around
" http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/irc-still-best-support-around".
I recommend reading the comments too.
http://www.linuxjournal.com/video/irc-chats-pidgin is a brief
video on setting up the Pidgin client.
As for the particular IRC client to use, I use XChat. But there
are plenty of others to choose from, such as Pidgin.
Others may have their own favorites.
irc.freenode.net is the chat server we use for the LVLUG,
as pointed on the lvlug.org home page. Do "/join #lvlug"
once you are connected to the Freenode server.
As the article mentions some users set up a notify
function to get their attention as I do. Just put my nick
(toga) in your message and i will be notified.
Both XChat and Pidgin have an open channel on freenode
if you need any help from either of them. I'm sure other
IRC clients have a presence there also.
