nstalled 9.10 the other day on my Aspire5100 laptop. Did it as an upgrade

It is much improved over 8.10. Faster in all ways. A lot less memory
leakage. Swap memory stops at under 10% as opposed to 30% in 8.10 Also
got wireless to work. There was an issue with the screen going into a
flicker after combing back from sleep, but that hardly ever happens
now. Some combination of my using

sudo /usr/share/acpi-support/screenblank

and the system just not going to sleep on its own.

I found the screenblank as a suggestion. but not as a real solution
I sometimes still get a flicker

I do have a newly discovered problem with gedit. The editor comes up
but only after:
doug at doug-laptop:~$ gedit

GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible
causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you
have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See
http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Server
ping error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0)

the above message is repeated exactly 33 times (determined by doing a
search on the string, counting, and finally doing a search and replace
and then having the system number the replacement.) I wanted certainty
and did not want anyone needing to look through all 33 messages.

So, anybody got any ideas. What does gedit have to do with any of the
nouns listed in the error message?

thanks.

One more thing. On occasion my system fails to boot. I mean it does
not even get to any script on the black screen. I have then been able
to boot by using a live disk. Even that may take more than one try.
Has not happened in over a week, but still...

Thanks
