[Lvlug] Need to Restore some MS Backup Files on Tape to Linux --- if Possible

Hi Heath,
I did try 'dd', but it had issues with the block size. I tried different block
sizes, but it made no difference. So, I was not able to get my hands on the data
under Linux, though I am pretty sure it has been done before.
I ended up just booting into Windows to get my hands on the data. Anyway, thanks for
the leads. I do appreciate it.
Terry

Have you tried using dd? I did some searching around to see if it was
possible, and some people have had success. You could create an image
of the tape, then try to extract the files using software in windows.
I saw a few virtual tape drive utilities for windows that may or may
not work for you. If nothing else you may be able pull apart the image
and manually extract the files.
Also, it seems like you can pass a tape drive to a qemu guest with KVM
(see: http://www.linux-kvm.com/content/kvm-76-released-performance-improvments-qemu-merge-kernel-support-device-assignment ).
I don't have a tape drive or I would test this on my Fedora 11 system.
Hopefully these suggestions will get you further along.
