Had a little problem last Sunday, as in kernel panic at boot after a
recompile - I yanked something out of the kernel configuration file I
shouldn't have (hate it when I do stoopid stuff...). This is on a FreeBSD
6.4 release distro.

Got back to the machine today. What I noticed was the panic occured in the
same place every time. Squawked something about unable to allocate vm and
promptly quit. Tried it three times, finally decided my hardware wasn't
going dodgy on me.

Stuck in the install DVD, selected 'fixit', copied the original kernel
from the 'kernel.old' directory to the boot directory after mounting the
hard disk. Did the reboot and the machine came up.

Copied the generic configuration over my custom configuration file, and
did a couple of recompiles and install (that'll stress it...), no problems
noted now. Had to do two recompiles because I forgot to insert the line
for multiprocessors.

Guess the biggest moral here is -

Always keep a good kernel handy. Never know when you'll need it.

Always have a good backup. I did, but didn't need it.

Me Happy - Chivas Time :-)
