All,
Just wanted to share a very nice experience from last night. The sky was pretty nice. I spent the longest time with my son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter observing from their front yard on Pama Lane.
I was using a small 76mm Catadioptric scope mounted on a table top tripod. We looked at the Orion Nebula, M-41 (could not see the Espin Star). Just due to the size of the scope could not see the Crab nebula. The scope needed a bit of collimation, but had only a limited time with a small allen wrench. The collimation procedure was the same as a standard SCT. M-45 was exceptional, and all were surprised to learn that this is the Subaru emblem.
Other objects within reach of this small scope...R Lepus, also known as "Hind's Crimson Star". Before the season ends be sure to check out this star if you have not observed before. Another good red star is UU Auriga...this is my favorite red star.
With a small scope, with only one eyepiece we were able to have a very nice star party. I might try to find my son a 66mm Apo refractor for use on a HD tripod.
I am for sure having fun in Las Vegas...
