All,
Just curious...any observing from Nevada last night, or Death Valley?
I have been very concerned about observing the February "Observer Challenge" objects, NGC-2903 and the M-105 group. Our weather has left something to be desired as of late. I have a lot of sketches and notes on the M-105 group, but am anxious to go back for new notes and another sketch. My notes are very sparse on NGC-2903 and I do not have a sketch.
We got a small snow yesterday afternoon and last night (see attachments). I measured 3.5 inches or possibly a bit more. The forecast is suppose to be good tonight for the foothills of western North Carolina. Clear skies, but temp's near 20°. Due to the location of the objects I will not begin until 10:00 (EST) or possibly later. I always like to observe the objects as close to the meridian as possible.
I am going to clean the snow off of my deck, as the ground is really soggy. It is pretty amazing that I can not only observe from this well built sun deck, but can even use high magnification. I am always seated, so I create no vibration.
There is a lot of contrast loss with snow on the ground, especially if you are observing from a moderately light polluted area, such as by backyard. I have unsheided streetlights in very close proximity.
If anyone has looked through the latest Orion catalog (# 103 Spring) it has an excellent picture of the Nebula Complex in Monoceros - NGC 2264. It was taken with a scope like that of James Dire. I wondered if he took the image?
