All,
Just had the greatest three days at Cathedral Gorge. Looking at those dark skies, I was like a kid in a candy store! Unfortunately, the first night, Thursday, I tired out at 11 or so. Had a long day. Friday, got to stay out a bit later and logged a bunch of stuff. Saturday evening, almost gave up the ghost but my wife and I were still a bit wired, so we kept watching the cloud cover. About midnight, the clouds started to dissipate and for about two hours, I was peeking at stuff through holes in the sky. By the time I gave up at 02:00, it was pretty clear but I knew I had a long drive so I gave up.
We had a great little Saturday picnic. Didn't win anything though.
Nailed my obsever's challenge for the month, the Helix Nebula. A report on that will come later.
I also found at least 30 Herschel 2's plus this one string of galaxies that I still haven't identified. I saw a total of 7 galaxies within the field of my cheap old Q70 eyepiece. I'll have more on that later.
For those of you that weren't able to attend, now I know what I've been missing out on.
Fred Rayworth
