All,
The weather has been terrible in western North Carolina as of late and I have been unable to observe the Helix or anything else. The weather forecast is for more rain and clouds this weekend. I want a new observation and sketch of the Helix. Not my notes of 1992.
I especially want to observe and sketch for the first time...NGC-6822 of the "Small Scope Challenge".
Rob, the "Small Scope Challenge" is a great idea and I plan to participate regularly when the the weather improves. Please don't think that I am not interesting in observing the OC NGC-6231 in Scorpius and also NGC-6822...quite to the contrary. Barnard's galaxy has been the bane of my galaxy observing for many years now. It is just not possible from my backyard. I am planning a trip to my new dark site in the South Mountains...20 minutes N of Boiling Springs.
Hopefully there will be many observations from Cathedral Gorge of all the objects, especially NGC-6822, and the Helical Nebula.
Another object. If anyone is up in the very early hours please try the companion to Sirius, AKA the "Pup". I have had some recent e-mail correspondences with Sue French and she has seen it in recent years with her Astro-Physics 105mm Traveler from the WSP in Florida.
She however has been unable to see it from her home in upstate New York with a +41° N latitude...Sirius is just too low.
James Mullaney has followed the orbit of the companion in recent years also...possibly using his C-5. Jim was the one that mentioned to me that he thought Sue had seen it in her 4-inch.
Sue said that a good 8-inch scope should present the companion easily with good seeing.
