Re: The tripod for the RC scope.
I thought the exact same thing...very perceptive indeed. When I first walked in and saw it, I was very surprised and had the same thought.
As I mentioned in my earlier e-mail, this is not a portable scope. I guess for the cost they just tossed it in...not really to be used.
Thanks for the kind words about the sketching. I was really surprised. The students seemed to really enjoy it. It was for extra credit, so I guess it was a lot easier than a physics test.

All,
Yeah, nice scope. That field tripod seems a bit inadequate, considering the weight of that monster.

All,
Just wanted to give a bit more information on the RC scope from the previous e-mail. At current the Williams Observatory has a 16-inch Meade LX200 mounted in the dome. It has already been removed. The RC 16-inch will be the primary observatory instrument. Observatory Director, Dr. Olive is very excited about the new scope and is most anxious to get it operational.
Did you notice that it came with a field tripod? Could you image carrying and setting up that massive mount and scope outside and then breaking it down at 3:00 AM? Something to smile about indeed.
This is a fine research grade telescope.
