LVAS all
I may have something very special for your viewing pleasure. I must first get permission to use this most "extraordinary" image. I can't tell what it is...as I hope to create some anticipation and wonderment. Yes, I do like images also and use them very frequently.
I must talk with this professional astro-photographer first. It has already been forwarded to me by a third party. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw it.
I hope that you can appreciate it as much I do. It will be the weekend at the earliest.
One more thing: I would like to convey my apology to Doug for a seemingly unfriendly e-mail of which I sent yesterday. For the ones unaware. There is sometimes "tension" by the "purist" or "visual" observers who still take notes and have no interest in the pursuit of AP. We are not appreciated very much by the majority of amateurs in this day and time, and we sometimes feel it. We must be too sensitive. I will exercise more discipline in the future when notes and sketches come under attack.
AP has taken the country by storm, and the "scientific visual" observer is becoming less and less. Please consider this important fact.
If our "observing program" is to be effective and enjoyable I must promote harmony between the groups. Visual observing and imaging are both important to amateur astronomy.
It is my intentions and purpose to bring piece between the two groups. I am trying very hard to keep the ancient art of taking "detail" notes and producing a sketch alive. So is Fred Rayworth.
Amateur astronomy will not gain by the complete loss of this group of people. There are only a very few in the country today that actively practice this skill or discipline.
Please remember, nothing will be gained if all the visual observers are run out of town.
Doug, I also had just completed a torturous bicycle training ride with a group in 30 mph winds with many hills for almost 50 miles. My blood sugar was low due to the fatigue and the need of food energy. I do respect your opinion, but it is my desire to convince you before the year is over of the value of "visual" observing, taking notes and sketching. I am going to work real hard.
Please support Fred in his efforts to take notes and sketch. Fred is an excellent observer, and the club is fortunate to have both him and his skills.
Re: Visual observing, notes and sketching. We cannot allow this very important facet of amateur astronomy to completely die. It is already on the endangered species list at current.
Best regards to all my friends of the LVAS....Roger Ivester
I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he could look up into the heavens and say there is no God. Abraham Lincoln
