[Lvas] Guest speaker at UNLV, March 18th

Fred and all,

Wish that I could attend the SN presentation. In years past I was always trying to be the first to discover a new SN. I have attached a couple of SN sketches from 1994. I have many but I wanted to share these.

I have the "Supernova" search chart book that covers hundreds of potential galaxies. This book gives the magnitude of all stars embedded or surrounding the designated galaxy.

Our group would observe the reported SN and attempt to estimate the magnitude. We would compare each morning and then see how close we were to all others observing throughout the world. The study of SN's can be very fun and rewarding. Most are pretty faint...normally 12th magnitude or fainter. The fun starts when you can estimate within a 10th of one magnitude as compared to others. This gives you the idea that you are doing a pretty good job.

The magnitude would vary from night to night until the "host" star would finally disappear.
