All,
The humidity can really be bad throughout the months of (June through August) but begins to much improve in September here in North Carolina. The further south you go, the greater the heat and humidity. The gulf states, including Alabama, Louisiana, Florida and Texas would be considered the worst in regard to high heat and humidity as related to poor seeing conditions...especially transparency.
The mountains of Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and even Georgia can be excellent during the summer months. One of the largest astronomy clubs in the US is in Atlanta. They observe west of Atlanta in the high mountains of Georgia. Each Spring they have a national meet, called "Peach State."
Until I went to the Tour of Georgia four years ago and watched Lance Armstrong win the climb of Brasstown Bald, I never realized how mountainous the NW portion of the state was. A jet helicopter picked up Lance and Cheryl Crowe, almost immediately after winning this most difficult stage.
There is actually a ski station in Georgia that runs from November till March. If you will check your map, the northern most part of Georgia meets the mountains of NC.
