All,

I've observed M-2 many times over the years but have never noticed the dark lanes. I've seen a bright foreground star, and several depths to it, using from an 8" to a 16" reflector. The dark lanes will be a great goal for me and I look forward to checking it out.

All,

Re: July observers challenge object; M-2 Globular Cluster In Aquarius

Found a most interesting photo of M-2. This is the first image that I have seen that shows the curving dark lane that was mentioned by John Mallas, "The Messier Album" using a 4-inch Unitron refractor. This

The following link presents an image from a 20-inch Ritchey-Chretien Cassegrain telescope.

Also on the site, a description from: "The Deep-Sky Field Guide To Uranmetria 2000", Willmann-Bell, Inc. Visual observers may be able to detect a curving dark lane in the NE sector.

The visual discription is only the second after the "Messier Album".

I have also attached a sketch of the Mallas sketch.

Pretty amazing.
