John,
Re: The Finest Deep-Sky Objects by James Mullaney and Wallace McCall.
That is pretty cool. The local astronomy club and GWU bought all the copies that Sky Publishing had in 1995. The $1.95 was the price paid for the bulk quantity at that time. I don't remember how many there was, but it was a small box full. All were sold at an annual event called the "Regional Gathering of Amateur Astronomer's" which is held every January at the University. I think the price was doubled and the club made a small profit. I paid $3.95 for my original copy many years ago.
I wonder where Adirondack Astronomy got their copies? There has not been a reprint that I am aware of.
Everyone should definitely consider purchasing a copy of this little nostalgic book for reference, also just for it's historic value.
Since Fred Rayworth is doing a program on visual observing at the next meeting I am sending a hand copy of M-13 and the propeller for a give away.
It will be #2 of 10, using a 12-inch Meade Lightbridge at a magnification near 200x. I wrote all the information on the back with a charcoal pencil and sprayed both sides with a sealer.
Today I made a copy of my update or "The Finest 105(+1) Deep-Sky Objects Revisited" from 1995-96 on a copier using 11 x 17 plain paper folded and copied on both sides and center stapled. I even did the cover and back. The original sketches do not look very good but it turned out ok. It is an amateur work at best, but does go a bit further than the original.
Maybe Jim was just being nice, but he gave me a good report after reviewing his copy in the Spring of 1996.
I am sending my "plain paper" copy to the LVAS in hopes that someone might find it interesting and would consider observing the 106 deep-sky objects as a personal project, or other.
