All,
I think that it was a good decision to allow an extra month for M-27.
Rob, what about the July object for small scopes?
I would like to report that even with a 4.8 limiting magnitude last week, I could glimpse the central star of M-27. I also saw two other stars using my 10-inch...however no other fine detail was to be seen. The shape was mostly a rectangular box with a brighter south-western lobe. The texture of the nebula was very even, with soft edges.
On another night under very similar conditions my 4-inch presented a view, but with far less detail as compared to the 10-inch view. I could still see the brighter SW lobe fairly easily.
The 3-D appearance that has long been talked about, or the "hanging in space" phenomenon was unavailable in either telescope.
Hopefully all of us will have better observing conditions next month and we can hope to see some of the fine details as described by Rob's research posted on the website.
