Re: Update of the Meade 4400 reflector telescope: Concerning the eyepiece change only.
I am assuming this is a 4-1/2-inch f/8 reflector. The biggest problem with 0.965 eyepieces are the poor quality, and the loss of FOV when using lower power oculars. I would recommend a 0.965 to 1.25 adaptor from Orion for about $20. It will not improve the loss of field, but it will allow the use of high quality 1.25-inch eyepieces. The loss of field would not be a big problem at lower powers...my opinion.
The adaptor would allow you to use high quality 1.25-inch eyepices without any modification or with a great deal of expense. The problem may be...not enough inward focus due to the increased height of the eyepiece.
As Rob said in an earlier e-mail you can change focuser and enlarge the hole to accommdate "even" a 2-inch focuser, however your present secondary would be too small for this. Your secondary may be too small for a 1.25-inch focuser.
If you want to change too many things you may very well be able to buy another OTA with everything you would like to have...ready to use. You may even save money.
There have been many of these reflectors sold in years past with the owner/observer using for many years with excellent results. Many years ago I had a very similar scope. I purchased several high quality 0.965 eyepieces and did some excellent work. This was over 20 years ago and at that time you could buy fully muti-coated RG 0.965 eyepices.
