Roger,
Very intriguing subject matter which reminds me of a book I read
a couple of years ago, THE PERFECT MACHINE (Building the
Palomar Telescope) by author Ronald Florence, remarkable reading!
Thank you also, for your feedback and communication to our club.
Clear Skies,
Bunny

Bunny,
I am sorry that I didn't answer your question, as I misread.
Yes, it is my understanding this is the same road that was used to transport the "famous" 200-inch mirror.

Bunny,
Excellent point. If I remember correctly an article quite a few years ago mentioned the many problems of the transport of the "sacred" mirror up the mountain.
The turn radius was too sharp in many of the 21 switchbacks and modifications of the road were required for the truck to continue the trek up to the designated and final resting place of the mirror.
Bunny, did you know also that the quartz for the mirror was mined here in North Carolina in the Blue Ridge Mountains near a small Swiss looking village named Little Switzerland. The quality of the quartz was determined to be the finest quartz in the United States. It was mined and then shipped to New York for the melting and manufacturing process. I live about 1.5 hours from Little Switzerland.
We often take our bicycles and ride in this area a lot to climb this very steep and difficult mountain. Excellent training. Mount Mitchell is only about 20 miles from this location (LS) and is the highest peak east of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet.
Thanks for sending out the important astronomy and telescope information.
Best regards, roger

Roger,
On the Tour of California, will they be on the same road
the 200 inch mirror came up in 1947?
