All,

I've seen it as an uneven flat oval, which would indicate what Roger is talking about. He's right. Visually you see different details that can be washed out by a photograph, as spectacular as they (the photographs) are.

It's like when you take a photo with different filters, you see different detail. In a way, consider the naked eye a filter.

Fred

David's image of NGC 891... This galaxy is oriented NNE and SSW. North is basically up on this image with east being to the left and south at the bottom. The bright star just north of the core is 12th which is just above the central bulge. On most any night I can easily see this 12th magnitude star from my backyard using a 10-inch reflector. The pair of relatively brighter stars which are 1.5 arc minutes SE of the core are actually pretty faint at 14th magnitude. I have been unable to see this pair of faint stars during many observations and they are void on all of my sketches. This faint star on the SSW tip is magnitude 13 and I have it drawn on all sketches. If you will look at David's image closely and "squint" your eyes you will notice that there is a greater concentration of the halo extension on the SSW section. This faint detail is much more noticeably with a careful visual observation than a photograph. This is due to the ability of the eye to recognize brigher features... Roger Ivester

Seeing was average, but the overall sky was very good. I wasn't sure whether it was Vegas or the moon that lit the sky The main light dome of Vegas did not rise above Sirius. Forecast for tonight looks better than Friday (hint, hint)I'll try posting a couple of images here...Orion NebulaGalaxy (Caldwell 23)
