[LVAS] FW: Concerning IC 10

Good morning all,

Just wanted to forward some interesting information regarding IC 10 from Sue French. I am very impressed with the details in some of these sketches from 8-inch scopes.

If the weather improves toward the end of the week I am hopeful to observe and sketch this object. Considering Jim's image and Rob's statement, I am wondering what my scope and sketch will present.

With the interest we seem to with IC 10, I really wish that we had picked this object for our December Observers Challenge.

Thanks, Roger. They were interesting to read.

Here are some observations with 8-inch scopes from the Finn's Deep Sky Archive that you might enjoy.

Location:

Kinnari, Järvenpää, Finland

Instrument:

Newton 200/1000

Magnification:

Weather:

Many cloudy rafts in the west and fewer in the north, damp air not moving, +7 °C.

Description:

This member of the Local Group is seen among the numerous stars of the Milky Way. The fairly high surface brightness helped much. The major axis in northwest-southeast-direction. It was no use using 200x power.

Weather:

Beautiful, Milky Way very detailed from Gemini to Sagittarius, M2 easy with NE, +8°C, faint aurorae N. Seeing: 1-2, BB: 1-2, Lim. Magnitude: 7.2 (SAO 30438)

Description:

Fairly faint. Bright 12th magnitude star in the center. Elongated in NW-SE direction. Very diffuse. Center slightly brighter. Several very faint foreground stars visible within the halo. Only the very nearby stars drawn to conserve time – objects to observe, people to see…

Weather:

+12°C, good but very moist

Description:

Very dim, but still fascinating. This galaxy is extremely diffuse and so the shape is difficult to determine. It seems elongated in NE-SW direction. All but impossible with direct vision.
