[LVAS] Concerning IC 10

Jim,

I am sure glad that you attempted IC 10. Your image and the comments by Fred and Rob would indicate that this galaxy may be pretty difficult for me...especially from my backyard.

Sorry I've been out of touch for a while. I processed the frames I captured last night of IC 10 and attached the result. I have a lot to learn about processing so I'm not sure if I didn't capture the nebulosity of the galaxy or just don't know how to pull it out yet. I downloaded an image from the web of IC10 and cropped my image to match the scale. Lining up the stars at least I captured the correct area but again the galaxy structure itself needs some imagination to see. I'll keep working on the processing to see if I can pull out any additional detail. Thanks Roger for bringing  this challenge to mind, otherwise I doubt I ever would have tackled it.

Re: IC 10

I missed a good opportunity last night to look for this object...just had something to come up at the last minute. It was a bit cold (20's) and somewhat breezy but the transparency was excellent. I may have a small window tonight. A front will be coming in on Saturday with the possibility of some light snow and freezing rain on Saturday.

I was just looking at an atlas and thought about a couple more objects in the far N that was difficult for me.  It was a good feeling when I finally saw them.

1. IC 1747 PN in Cas 13.5 M with a very faint central star...I came in smiling that night back in the early 90's. 

2. NGC 188 OC, just a few degrees from Polaris. It took me several nights of spending an hour or more each time. I would just give up and go to other things...finally all things were right and there it was. This was almost 20 years ago but I can remember it as well as if it were yesterday. As you said about IC 10, not terribly exciting but I saw it.

I am glad that both you and Rob have been able to see IC 10. Hopefully I will be able to see it also.

Roger and all,

I saw it for the first time that last night at Redstone on 21 November.

It was just a faint glow against the background and now I know why I missed it. After seeing it described by a few other visual observers, I kind of knew what to look for. The last time I tried was I think at Cathedral Gorge and again at Death Valley and never saw it. I was looking for a faint fuzzy oval that was not very big. However, IC-10 was just a medium-sized faint glow that looked more like a distant open cluster. Though it was a thrill to finally find it, it was dramatially unimpressive to look at!

Rob,

If you should observe tonight, would you please take a look at IC-10 in Cassiopeia? I am in discussion with a couple others concerning this faint galaxy.

I have never observed this galaxy and would really be interested in both your visual and Mallincam view. I am hopeful to attempt before the weekend.

Jim Dire sent me an e-mail saying that he was going to attempt a very long exposure of our December object (NGC-474 group) if at all possible.

Hey, if I were there I would sure go with you. It is mostly cloudy here tonight and the wind is really howling.
