Roger,
Cool story! In Spain I used to go around the neighborhood and pop the circuit breakers on all the nearest street lights.

All,
Re: Streetlights, backyards, and generally bad observing sites.
I wanted to share an event from the 70's. I was living in a rented house in a neighborhood with many streetlights. It was a weekday night at 11:30 PM and I was trying to locate M-81/82 with my new Edmund 4-1/4-inch, f/10 reflector.
In my backyard was an incredibly bright streetlight. It was less than 30 foot from my telescope, but fortunately it was south and I was looking north. I was able to use my house to shield a light that was just across the street that would otherwise shine directly into my scope. The highway was very close, probably less than 75 foot away. When the big trucks would drive by, my telescope would vibrate. I could feel this vibration in my feet also.
I was using the sky map from the center of S&T as my guide. After an hour or so of looking for my intented targets and thinking that I had to get to bed...it happened. One galaxy came into the fov and then the second. I was excited and amazed. This would rate as my most memorable observing session ever, all within a cluster of streetlights.
I went to bed feeling like I was a real astronomer.
Roger

Bunny,
Very impressive work from the comforts of your backyard. This is the best report that I have heard today.
For over 30 years I too have used house corners, light block curtains, and other means to stay in my many backyard's.
Good job...
Roger

Making myself comfortable in the backyard, facing NE under three street lights and the waning moon, (which I was able to obstruct) I observed from 2 am until 4:30 am. I counted ten horizontal, vivid, spewing streaks of light. One out of the ten was a very bright fireball.
I must say, a very rewarding endeavor!
