All,
Yesterday was very hot and humid with late evening storms everywhere in the region. I expected this to linger throughout the night.
I got home last night at 9:30 to find a sky that mimicked that of an excellent 20° January night.
I could see all the stars in the little dipper with ease and overhead the limiting magnitude was 6 to 6.5. This was from my backyard. I thought about getting out my 10-inch and working on M-27, the Propeller again, M-2 and small scope challenges NGC-6231 in Scorpius, and NGC-6822 in Sagittarius.
It was too late to setup and have enough time before the rising of the moon. A few quick views may have been possible on some of the observers challenge objects and also the excellent small scope objects.
I am really glad that Rob has put NGC-6822 on the small scope observers challenge. I have been unsuccessful with this object for many years due to the weather, and ambient lights from my backyard. My southern sky is my worst.
I am hopeful that there will be a number of reports of Barnard's galaxy as it has eluded me for so long. I am going to a darksite this year and maybe it will be easy. Remember to look for PN NGC-6818 which is less than 1/2° NNW of NGC-6822. I can normally always see this planetary very easily under bad conditions.
I got up at 3:30 AM to find a completely cloud filled sky. Maybe conditions will allow for a few meteors tonight.
Did anyone get out last night in Nevada?
Roger
