I agree. I've been moderately successful in my backyard, but success is relative :). I attached a few shots I have done with a modified canon 40D. They were taken with a 12" LX @ F10. I do use a Hutech LPS filter which helps. I'm going to spend a couple of weeks at Bryce Canyon in May so I'm hoping to get my rig mobile to take advantage of the dark skies.

You definitely have to get out of the city, where the sky is
dark. Even with Broad or Narrow band filters, you still get a lot of
background glow when the background is well lit.
