I'm going to work on a more detailed shot of each of these galaxies over
the next few nights. I'll post them if I have any luck.

Jim,

Skiff and Lunginbuhl; Observing Handbook And Catalog of Deep-Sky
Objects: NGC-3628: The companion galaxy to M-65/66. "The halo extends
to 10' x 1', elongated E-W; it extends more W than E from the center".
Your image shows this very nicely.

Many years ago Tom English taught me how to "squint" my eyes when
looking at a photo to see fine detail that might be visually seen
through a telescope. I find myself using this technique all the time
when comparing notes to images. I wonder if Tom remembers teaching this
to me? If you will try this technique you can see the greater
concentration in the halo toward the W. It is very subtle, but can be
seen.

Tom Lorenzin of 1000+: "10.3 magnitude 12' x 2' extent";

For all others reading. Jim's image orientation; N is up, right is W. I
will look for the greater extension to the W, hopefully this weekend. I
do not not mention this in any of my notes.

M-65: S/L note a stellar nucleus at low power using a 60mm refractor.
My notes do not mention this either, as I indicate only a brighter more
concentrated middle with my 10-inch.

Jim, from close examination of your image there seems to be much that I
have missed. Thanks again for sharing.

Very elongated galaxies such as NGC-3628 with a ratio of 10 to 1 seem
to my favorites.

Observer from North Carolina, and best regards....Roger Ivester

Roger thanks for staying engaged. Your efforts have inspired several to
observe more than they normally would. I know they have inspired me. I
included a couple of photos I shot Saturday night from my backyard. The
Leo Triplet and M27.
Thanks again,
Jim

Fred, and John

I do appreciate your very kind words and I thank you. I will have the
two sketches in the mail early week. It takes a day for the blue paint
to dry and I coat the sketch with a light coat of clear acrylic sealer
to prevent the charcoal from smearing.

I did receive an e-mail from Jim Dire this afternoon. He is planning on
an image of the diamond and the Virgo cluster this coming weekend. He
and his wife have been on a tropical vacation.

The weather shows to be excellent at this time, but that can change
fast this far out.

Again, I was really surprised that Tom English could see the fifth star
so easily. Tom has worked tirelessly for years in astronomy without
receiving much fanfare, or compliments.

Fred, I am sure that he will appreciate your enthusiasm regarding his
observational notes, and sketches of Friday night. I just forwarded your
e-mail to him.

Tom,

Wow! Those are excellent notes and drawings. A fine job. I'm crossing
my fingers I can get out next weekend and do the same.

Thank you Roger for carrying the torch!

Roger, I am honored to be receiving a sketch you did of the Virgo
Diamond. It will sit in a place of honor on my wall.

Did anyone else get out last night? I'd like to hear a report if any of
you are willing to take a few minutes.

Fred

LVAS all,

I misread Tom's original report. He did see the fifth star and supplied
an excellent sketch. Tom may be the first person to visually observe the
fifth star.

Weather and conditions permitting I am going to attempt tonight with my
10-inch. I really don't expect to see the fifth star, but I am going to
try.
