Hi Bunny,
I know you guys go to Furnace Creek a couple times a year, but I wanted to invite any of your members that maybe miss your event to join us Dec 26-30. John always gives a talk at the furnace Creek Visitor Center on the 27th and we have scopes out there every night and during the day if there’s any spots. We don’t have enough people sign up to go to get the discount you guys get at furnace Creek, so this year we are going to stay at Death Valley Junction. I know its kind of creepy but its kind of cool too and close enough that we can go to Furnace Creek and do our thing. I know that right after Christmas is not a good time for most people, and we usually have a Moon, but its still kind of nice because lots of people tell us they visit at that time of year because they know we’ll be there and John’s talk is one of the most popular according to the rangers.
I’ll be honest, its more the John experience than anything. We set up next to the visitor center and have the public there for about an hour or so and then we’re pretty much done. We are out there from about 9 am until 9pm, showing people whatever there is to see and sometimes grinding a mirror and letting them try. It isn’t a dark sky event, it’s all about the public.
But, with JDs recent stroke, its made me realize that he might not keep doing this kind of thing much longer and I’d really like to get a bigger group this year. I think it would be great if we could have some scopes at Furnace Creek on Saturday when JD gives his talk and have one or two over at Death Valley Junction because the Opera House usually gets a good crowd on Saturday nights (at least they did last year). It would also be good if we could build a scope while were up there too.
Please pass this on to your members and let them know that even if they come up for a day or two it would be great.
The other thing I wanted to mention was the IYA cornerstone project 100 Hours of Astronomy. Please go to our website www.100hoursofastronomy.org and sign the email list.
